Alison Layland, MITI

I am a skilled freelance translator with more than 20 years’ experience, providing quality translations for a wide range of companies. I translate from German, French and Welsh into English, and am a full member of the ITI and the Society of Authors.

A former Chartered Surveyor, I am also a published novelist and short story-writer. The skills learned in both areas are important in helping me to convey the right register in a translation, whether it’s a practical information text requiring precision and technical understanding, or a work of literary fiction requiring close attention to the author’s voice.

Areas of expertise include: literary translation, travel and tourism, marketing, building and architecture, business texts, contracts. Clients include: translation agencies, publishers, tourist boards, holiday companies, construction companies, civil engineers and manufacturers.

Technical information: I use translation memory software MemoQ to ensure consistency and accuracy.

I won the Translators’ House Wales – Oxfam Cymru 2010 Translation Challenge with the translation of a short story by Haitian author Yanick Lahens, and was subsequently commissioned to translate the novel The Colour of Dawn (La Couleur de l’Aube) by the same author. I took part in the Translation Challenge again in 2012 for the fascinating 26 Treasures project, with my translation of a poem by Tony Bianchi appearing in the beautiful book that accompanied it.
