Welcome to the website of Alison Layland
Writer, editor and translator

I am a writer, editor and translator. My novels are published by Honno Welsh Women’s Press, and my translation work has included many published fiction and non-fiction books.

Exciting news! My latest novel, After the Clearances, will be published, again by Honno, in July 2025 – see here for more details. Focusing on a family in an offgrid island community in the year 2056, and set against a dark political and environmental situation, this gripping climate fiction novel explores themes of belonging, protest and betrayal. You can preorder a copy here.

My second novel, Riverflow, was published in June 2019. In August of that year, Waterstones chose it as their Welsh Book of the Month, saying “The devastating effects of climate change are brought terrifyingly close to home in a gripping psychological novel exploring family, community and loss.” Set on the banks of the River Severn on the Welsh border, it has become increasingly relevant since publication as the effects of climate change are felt, with floods and protest alike.

My debut novel, Someone Else’s Conflict, was published in 2014 and is a compelling narrative of trust and betrayal, storytelling and war, love, loyalty and honour, that sweeps the reader from present-day Yorkshire to the 1990s conflict in Croatia.
